The agricultural and trade industry of the northern and Arctic territories is intended for providing the population with biologically full-fledged local food. In article social and economic value is researched, features of development of agricultural industry and food self-sufficiency of the Russian North are revealed. Experience of the organization of agricultural industry in the foreign northern countries is considered. Generalization of practice of its maintaining allows to recommend for Russia the Scandinavian way of development of agricultural industry and first of all to Finland. On the basis of statistical data tendencies of development of agricultural industry of a zone of the North and the Arctic during the predreformenny period and in the conditions of market reforms are considered. Results of a research can be used in case of development of the strategy of development for agrofood sector of regions of the North and the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
