The formation of innovative firms in any economy is a discrete process that does not have clearly expressed linearity. As a result, innovation processes in each company take place not only with different intensities, but also with different time and stage deviations. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to identify features and positive and negative aspects of various types of management of innovative companies. Based on the concept of innovative process and the system method for describing approaches to managing a company, the article describes three macro types of innovative companies — research firms, small innovative firms and large corporations — with clear differences in the construction and content of their innovative processes. At the same time, the authors pay attention not so much to the enlarged scheme of the innovative process as to its decomposition based on the breakdown of classic stages into smaller stages (since small stages much better reflect individual business processes and their corresponding effects). That is why it is important to determine within which approaches such firms should be managed. The proposed cost, revenue, reproduction and situational approaches are described not only from the point of view of what effects are extracted within them at each stage of the innovation process, but also from the point of view of their application in formation of the innovation project management system. The results of the study are focused on their use by owners and managers in building a strategic management system for their company in general and its innovative process in particular. For each of the considered management approaches, estimates of their applicability from the perspective of the innovative process are given, features of each of them are disclosed, key types of management operations characterizing these approaches are formulated. This, in turn, makes it possible to use this research in the development of a set of management and regulatory tools in the framework of interaction between the state and innovative companies.
