The development of domestic tourism contributes to attracting tourists to Russian regions is shown; it is important to consider tourism as one of the areas of economic revitalization that has a stimulating effect on the development of sectors that are closely related to tourism: hotel business, transport infrastructure, communications, trade, catering, souvenir production, agriculture and construction. With the right business processes in place, the tourism sector can be an excellent resource for building territorial budgets. However, drastic changes in the operating conditions and external environment will require specialists for the tourism industry who are able to adapt quickly to the changing working conditions and new demands of tourists. The transition to training to new educational and professional standards in tourism will require changes in the training process. The need to practise professional skills and new competences in line with the professional standards will also require changes in the practical training process to confirm the level of qualification obtained.

Keywords: changing the conditions for the functioning of the tourism industry, the development of domestic tourism, training for the tourism sector, educational and professional standards, skills and competencies of personnel for the tourism sector, improving the quality of tourism services, professional competencies.
