The aim of the study is to select the most promising approaches to improving the efficiency of the institutions of ac-celerated innovative development of regions. The article considers the history of the formation of local regional institu-tions in the world and in Russia, which have become drivers of innovation. The importance of special economic zones in the formation of accelerated development of territories is shown. On concrete examples the detailed analysis of efficiency of functioning of various forms of the analyzed institutes, application of preferential modes of work of the enterprises in territories of advanced development, innovative and investment practice of work is presented. The study revealed the main trends in the development of territorial drivers, as well as the main problems of their formation. In the process of the analysis, the authors used such research methods as generalization, comparison, method of analogies, as well as methods of logical-theoretical, retrospective and empirical analyses. For the study, the authors used data from municipal, regional and Federal statistics, official websites of regional and Federal government agencies, Internet resources. On the basis of the conducted research the importance of digitalization in territorial drivers, as well as the role of regional authorities in the formation and support of the institutions of accelerated innovative development of territories is shown. Measures are proposed to strengthen cooperation between enterprises and accelerate the transfer of technologies and innovations be-tween them. The theoretical and practical significance of the study is that the results of the work can be used in the ad-justment of existing State programs for the development of special economic zones, the development of similar state Pro-grams for the medium and long term.
