Abstract. As international and domestic practice shows, over the past decades, the implementation of certain models implemented by the current legislative and declared authorities significantly reduces the effectiveness of adaptation mechanisms of the population, weakening their impact on the socio-economic development of not only specific territories, but also the country as a whole. As a result of progress in the development of adaptation mechanisms of the population in recent years, caused by their transformation into the form of a project, which has become a kind of response to emerging contradictions in this area. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the factors and reveal the structure of institutional mechanisms of adaptation of the population to dynamically changing socio-economic conditions. The following research methods were chosen: generalization of the practice of adaptation of the population in Russia and abroad; an institutional analysis of the interaction of the population and the economy. Based on the analyzed domestic and foreign experience and as a result of the conducted research, the following tasks were solved: the trend of the development of adaptation mechanisms of the population is substantiated; the nature of the processes occurring during the adaptation of the population, taking into account their complexity and diversity, is considered; the key factors stimulating the processes of adaptation of the population are identified; the essence of the project nature of the institutional mechanism of adaptation of the population is revealed; the structure of the institutional mechanism of adaptation of the population is determined. Further development of adaptation mechanisms of the population will provide an opportunity to more effectively counteract the problems arising in the socio-economic sphere of local territories by involving the population and resources in this process on a project basis. The paper analyzes modern approaches to determining the processes occurring during the adaptation of the population, as well as the analysis of adaptation resources and adaptation strategies of modern society. The analysis of the trend in the development of group consciousness in modern society is carried out, the key features of the socio-economic adaptation of modern society in Russia are identified.
