The global community is faced with the socio-economic instability caused by the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19. The crisis that arose in the world economy due to the imposed restrictions on counteracting the spread of infection caused great damage to the country's economy both at the regional and national levels. The economy of the border regions suffered the most. The crisis that emerged in 2020 is unlike any of the previous ones in the world. The emergence of the coronavirus contributed to the emergence of new socio-economic realities, to which it became necessary to adapt to absolutely all economic entities, regardless of their location and size. The realities that have arisen undoubtedly show the relevance of the chosen topic of scientific research. Economic instability negatively affected the viability and sustainability of entrepreneurship, the main problem faced by the small and medium-sized business sector during the period of coronavirus restrictions is the lack of the necessary resources to maintain an autonomous state of business for a long time during the period of economic fluctuations. This problem is primarily associated with the small amount of capital in small and medium-sized businesses. The scientific study examines the problems of adaptation processes in the small and medium-sized business sector, which carries out its economic activities in the border territories of the country during the period of socio-economic changes that have arisen in the Russian economy in recent years. The purpose of the research is to study the ongoing processes of adaptation of small and medium-sized businesses to the problems that arise in modern realities. To achieve this goal, statistical and analytical research methods were used. After analyzing the adaptation processes occurring due to transformations in the social, political and economic spheres on the example of the Kurgan region, the problematic aspects of the adaptive behavior of small and medium-sized businesses in border areas were identified. The development of entrepreneurship in the border areas is one of the most promising areas of the country's economic development, which once again proves the need for further study of this topic and the creation of a “multiplicative adaptation mechanism” for small and medium-sized businesses in border areas, which will include all types of the considered adaptation mechanisms.

Keywords: border areas; small and medium business; diversification; adaptation of entrepreneurship; socio-economic conditions; adaptation processes.
